Leaving Soon

Team Redwood will be leaving for Haiti soon (Nov 2-12, 2011). We have been fundraising and recruiting and packing and purchasing and planning and it looks like this will be a wildly successful mission. We have plans on providing medical care in several schools and orphanages, workng in a very short-handed hospital and even a trip to the HIV/AIDs hospital Gheskio. We will be providing food and repairs to an orphanage in the Port Au Prince neighborhood of Fontamara. We just recieve word that one of the adults helping this place is begging for food to care for the 29 children in this place from ages 7 months to 16 years. He is only able to get supplements of rice from an agency once every 3 months. Some of these kids do not even have beds to sleep on. Donations can be made to Team Redwood at North Valley Bank, 1492 Northcrest Drive, Crescent City, CA 95531. 100% of all money goes directly to the care of the gracious and beautiful Haitian people. We do not spend it on admnistrative costs.

Team Redwoods’ Adopt an Orphanage Community Fundraiser

Team Redwood, is a group of members from the community of Del Norte County that went on a medical mission trip
to Haiti in November 2010.
As we just pass the one year anniversary of the earthquake, we see now how much more can be done in Haiti.
We have decided to invite our community to reach out again as we “ Adopt an Orphanage”.
The Orphelinat Refuge des Orphelins (Shelter of the Orphans) is a non-profit, orphanage in Port au Prince that houses
approximately 30 children, ranging in age from under 1 to 16 years old. These children are permanent residents and
therefore need not only health care but the minimal supplies for survival. They are just now sleeping inside and have no
bedding to speak of. The orphanage is in need of cleaning supplies and extra help to clean on a
regular basis. The orphanage is also trying to educate the children and the list of necessary educational items is well
beyond a page long.
Our goal is to raise money, which will pay for teams of four people to go to Haiti, send money to the orphanage for food (which is a daily struggle) and for the team to take with them the necessary medications, cleaning supplies and various other items such as school supplies and clothing as well as provide medical care during each visit. I stress to you the main reason this money has been and will be put to such good use, is through the local people who are dedicated to donating their time to take the medications and supplies with them to Haiti. Shipping or mailing is out of the question as packages sit in customs for over a year, if they are ever received at all. This means that ALL supplies must be carried over in luggage by Team Redwood during each trip. Some Airlines give baggage waivers but there is no guarantee and no way to know this until you are checking in at the gate. Packing efficiently is still quite costly, in order to be able to deliver the adequate amount of supplies needed each trip.
Remember, up to this point, all money for prior trips have been donated locally to raise the necessary medication
and supplies. Each member raised their own funds to pay for airline tickets, hotel and luggage as well as meals,
security and transportation while in Haiti. This amount comes to a minimum of $1300.00 per person per trip. Not to mention
that each person took time off of work, unpaid or using precious vacation time, to journey to help the people of
Haiti.
